Sri Lanka Travel Guide
Travel Tips
Everything you need to know before your Sri Lanka adventure — from packing lists to cultural etiquette.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Climate overview
Sri Lanka is tropical year-round with temperatures between 27–33°C on the coast. Hill country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya) is cooler at 15–20°C — bring a light jacket.
Best seasons
West & South Coast: December–March. East Coast: May–September. Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy): Year-round, but avoid heavy monsoon months of May–June. Shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds and better prices.
Monsoon awareness
The South-West monsoon (May–July) and North-East monsoon (November–January) can cause road disruptions. Our team monitors conditions and updates itineraries proactively.
What to Pack
Clothing essentials
Light, breathable fabrics (cotton or linen) for the heat. Pack modest clothing — covered shoulders and knees are required at temples and religious sites. A light rain jacket is useful year-round.
Day bag must-haves
Sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent (DEET-based), reusable water bottle, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat. Good walking sandals or sneakers for temple visits and nature trails.
Electronics
Sri Lanka uses Type D/G plugs (230V). Bring a universal adapter. A power bank is handy for long safari days. For photography, a UV filter protects your lens in bright coastal light.
Health & Safety
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations for Sri Lanka, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. Consult your doctor or travel clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure.
Food & water safety
Drink bottled or filtered water only — avoid ice from unknown sources. Street food from busy stalls is generally safe and delicious. Wash hands frequently, especially before meals.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. State hospitals are free but basic; private hospitals in Colombo and Kandy are modern and reliable.
Money & Payments
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency. USD and EUR are widely accepted at hotels and tourist sites. Exchange at banks or licensed moneychangers — avoid airport rates.
ATMs & cards
ATMs (Commercial Bank, Sampath, HNB) are widely available in cities and tourist towns. Notify your bank before travelling. Carry some cash for rural markets, tuk-tuks, and small eateries.
Tipping culture
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A standard tip is 10% at restaurants and LKR 500–1,000 per day for guides and drivers. Your tour guide's name will be on your booking — a small personal thank-you goes a long way.
Culture & Etiquette
Dress code at temples
Remove footwear before entering temples and religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees — sarongs are available to borrow at most sites. Avoid turning your back to Buddha statues when photographing.
Dining customs
Sri Lankans traditionally eat with the right hand. It's polite to try local food and accept invitations to eat. Always ask before photographing people, especially at religious ceremonies.
General courtesy
Sri Lankans are warm and hospitable. A smile and 'Ayubowan' (traditional greeting) goes a long way. Bargaining is acceptable at markets but do so respectfully. Avoid public displays of affection.
Connectivity & Getting Around
SIM cards
Pick up a tourist SIM at the airport (Dialog or Mobitel). A data plan of 10GB costs around LKR 1,500 (~$5 USD). Coverage is excellent in cities and most tourist regions.
Wi-Fi
Most hotels, guesthouses, and cafes offer free Wi-Fi. Speeds vary — download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) for backup navigation on remote routes.
Getting around
Our private vehicles are the most comfortable option for tour travel. Tuk-tuks are great for short local hops — agree on a price before you get in. The Kandy-Ella scenic train is a must-do experience; book tickets in advance.
